The Camp Doglando Newsletter
Session 2 - Day 7 (Tuesday)
This morning, the campers came in and cleaned their dogs' crates and discussed how their nights went with the dogs. Then it was time to go outside for a long line walk and potty. The campers continued working on driving their dogs with the long line just dragging behind. After a good session, the campers came inside and put their dogs up.
Then it was game time. But not just any games...these games tested the campers speed, agility, and reaction time. They had to learn how to match their dogs in all these categories.
The campers played Duck, Duck, Goose and had to change the way they sat every couple rounds. Then they played Musical Chairs, which also doubled as a chance for the campers to showcase their singing voices.
After the games, it was time to take the dogs out once more for a loose leash walk. The campers ran their dogs to release some energy, because our next outing was without the dogs. The campers put their dogs back into their crates and loaded onto the bus.
For today's outing, we went to Doglando Foundation, which is Doglando's non-profit organization that rescues pregnant dogs and their litters. There, campers got to meet the equine vet who treats the donkeys and goats that live on the property. They got to learn about the profession, listen to a donkey’s heartbeat, and see vaccinations given to both the donkeys and a baby goat.
The campers asked questions as they learned about medical supplies and what types of illnesses the vet is able to treat. They were also able to view some x-rays of the baby goat before he was born. When the vet visit was over it was time to go back to the barn.
Back at the barn, campers took their dogs out to go potty and run, then we headed to Panera for lunch. Everyone ordered their food to go and got back onto the bus. The campers ate their lunch on the bus, then they went out to post flyers in shops around the Waterford Town Center. Next, it was time to get back to the barn, because someone was coming to have a Meet and Greet with some of the dogs.
The campers took their dogs out quickly when we got back before going inside. Then they sat in front of their crates while a woman and her son came inside to meet the dogs that had no applications for adoption yet. They were looking for a dog who would be compatible with cats.
After they had met each dog, it was time for another special guest! A Camp Doglando member came to showcase his drawing skills! Dana is a cartoonist and an author. He put together a fun presentation to show the campers what he does.
Then, the kids each took turns drawing a part of a cartoon dog to create one of their very own. The campers let their creativity flow when they each drew their camp dogs in a cartoon style. It was an incredible experience, and at the end, there was a small raffle. Two campers won a copy of a book that Dana wrote and illustrated!
To finish up the day, the campers went to the Nature Play area without their dogs for a little bit. They played Hide and Seek and other fun games, and were able to go into the lake to cool down a bit.
Then, they returned to the barn where they got ready to go home. Homework was written on the board and the campers got their stuff to leave. And that was Day 7!
