The Camp Doglando Newsletter
Session 1 - Day 5 (Friday)
On Friday morning, the campers and dogs arrived at the barn, cleaned their crates, and shared their adventures from the night before.
Then, the campers started the day with crate exercises. The campers were able to walk three steps from the crate without the dogs running out.
They also began to work on distractions which could be turning around or stomping their feet. This offered a challenge to the dogs but, even so, the dogs waited patiently in their crates
Following the successful crate training, it was time to head outside for some loose leash walking. The campers worked on continuing to keep their dogs by their sides. When a dog left their camper's side, they would start to walk backwards and recall them, or do inside turns to redirect their attention.
This loose leash walking skill would be used later when the dogs went on the first field trip! The campers packed their bags and loaded up on Doglando's dog buses with their dogs to go to Lowe’s.
When they arrived at Lowe’s, they first waited outside, working with their dogs to get them ready to enter the store. Once inside, the campers walked their dogs around the plants, getting them used to the new environment and smells.
After they were comfortable, they walked in a line and made a loop around the store. The dogs were sniffing the new smells while sticking close to their camper's side. While at Lowe’s they got to meet lots of new people.
After that, we went to Marketplace to get some lunch. The dogs took a much-needed nap while the campers ate some lunch. After lunch, the campers loaded backonto the bus and headed back to Doglando.
Then, the campers had some time to cool off in the pool and play games. After that, everyone sang happy birthday to Ashley, who’s 12th birthday is on Saturday! (today)
Next, it was time for the campers' first guest speaker, Mitch -- a Doglando member, who talked to the campers about writing, makeup, and film.
Mitch shared his experiences and funny stories working as a makeup artist and making his own movie. He then showed his skills by putting a gunshot wound and horns on Kaylee.
After that, it was time to clean the barn. Everyone split into groups to bleach the barn, blow out the buses, and clean the bathroom. Then it was time to fill bags of food for campers to take home for the weekend and talk about their homework.
After a little celebration with cookies for Ashley’s birthday, it was time for the campers and their dogs to head home after a successful week of camp!
See you next week!
